Thania Garcia Following Rihanna’s explosive Super Bowl LVII halftime show, Hoobastank’s Doug Robb admitted the band once rejected a feature from Rihanna. “Back when we were recording our third album, ‘Every Man For Himself,’ we were approached by someone at our label, Island Def Jam, about potentially featuring a ‘new artist’ on one of the songs,” Robb told Consequence in a statement. “This kind of stuff happens all the time. We said, ‘Sure. Who do you have in mind?’ It was Rihanna. I had never heard of her. I don’t think anyone else in the band had, either, at the time.” Robb revealed the song Rihanna recorded for them was “Inside Of You,” from the alt-rock band’s 2006 album.

Jem Aswad Senior Music Editor More than 30 Turkish, Syrian and local musicians will perform at benefit concerts taking place in New York on Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 18-19), in an effort to help raise funds for those affected by the devastating earthquakes that struck those countries earlier this month. The death toll from the quakes is reported to be at least 35,000, a number likely to rise in the coming days. The concerts will be held at the New York venue DROM, with 100% of ticket proceeds going to benefit the Turkish Philanthropy Fund and Basmeh Zeitooneh, a registered non-governmental organization working in Syria and Turkey — more details can be found here and here; the concerts’ program appears below.

Selome Hailu “The Last of Us” has debuted on Nielsen’s weekly streaming Top 10 rankings with 837 million minutes watched from Jan. 16-22, the first full week that Episode 1 was available on HBO Max. And as Nielsen’s viewing window ends on Sunday nights, which is when the show debuts, this number also includes viewership of Episode 2 in its first few hours of streaming. This is the series’ first time making the chart, though Nielsen did previously report that Episode 1 was viewed for 233 million minutes during the Jan. 9-15 window, which only included the episode’s first few hours of availability. To contextualize that major accomplishment, 233 million is more than one-third of the viewership achieved by that week’s No. 10 title, which had been streaming for an entire week.

Discovery programming execs are trying a new experiment: Airing some iconic modern-day HBO programming on basic cable, beginning with comedy “Silicon Valley” on TBS and drama “True Blood” on TNT this Saturday. As this is TV — not HBO — the shows will be edited both for content (receiving a TV-MA rating) and ad breaks. While this is not the first time HBO content has been refashioned for cable — think “Sex and the City” or “The Sopranos,” both of which were sold into syndication — it does mark a first for programming produced and aired on HBO in more recent years. (“True Blood” ended in 2014, “Silicon Valley” concluded in 2019.)

Filler a longtime producer at NBC News’ “Today” who became editor in chief at E! News, will join NBCU’s advertising-sales unit as an executive vice president working on developing sponsorships and content integrations related to NBCU personalities and intellectual property. She will report to Josh Feldman, chief marketing officer for NBCU’s advertising and partnerships unit. Since joining E! News in 2019, Filler joined E! News in 2019 and has worked to develop content efforts across properties including Twitter, Snapchat, YouTube, Facebook, TikTok and Instagram. During her tenure, she has worked with the ad-sales division. Filler, who was won four Emmy Awards as a producer, over a ten-year period was executive producer of the fourth hour of “Today,” which she developed into a sub-brand of the franchise anchored by Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb.  

Matt Donnelly Senior Film Writer Jake Bongiovi, budding actor and son of rocker Jon Bon Jovi, is one of three young stars who have joined the cast of the comedy “Rockbottom,” Variety can report exclusively. Bongiovi, a considerable social media presence and native to the music space, will join McKaley Miller (“Ma”) and Teala Dunn (“Crush”) in the feature project from writer-director and SFX makeup guru Todd Tucker (“The Terror of Hallow’s Eve”). The actors will orbit lead Tom Everett Scott (“That Thing You Do,” “13 Reasons Why”). Tucker’s script, co-written with Greg Zekowski, follows 1980s hair metal band CougarSnake, whose career ended just as it was starting due to clashes over the direction of the group. In the present day, a mention of the band in an interview by Billboard-charting, Gen-Z music star Bryce Cooper (Brandon Butler), whose absentee father introduced him to CougarSnake as a child, creates a frenzy to find the members of the group and reunite them as opening act for Cooper’s forthcoming charity concert. Scott stars as Jesse, the bass player for CougarSnake, who has not-so comfortably settled into single fatherhood. Unsure whether he wants to relive his faded rockstar dreams, his daughter Alex (Miller) and her best friend Kat (Dunn) join forces to change his mind and get the band back together. Bongiovi will play Justin, the potential new lead singer, who must overcome stage fright to lead the band back to glory.

Murtada Elfadl A compelling character-based drama that reveals the interior life of a young trans man over roughly 24 hours in New York City, “Mutt” follows Feña (Lío Mehiel) as he tries to navigate a series of events that would be stressful for anyone. Piling on setbacks that specifically challenge someone still working out how to reintroduce himself to old friends and family members, writer-director Vuk Lungulov-Klotz — who is also trans — makes audiences acutely conscious of Feña’s emotional state at every turn. “Mutt,” which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, sees the first-time helmer creatively using the medium to illustrate how small incidents can chip away at a trans person’s self-confidence and the strength it takes to stay true to that identity.

Charna Flam Veteran entertainment publicist Andrew Freedman died Feb. 8 in New York after being diagnosed with liver cancer in August. He was 67. Freedman worked with clients including Gayle King, Barbara Walters, Joan Collins, Margo Martindale, Christopher McDonald and Harry Shearer. Prior to his career as a publicist, Freedman served as communications specialist to Sen. Ted Kennedy during his 1980 presidential campaign, which was followed by his campaign work for Sen. George McGovern in South Dakota and Reps. Jim Howard and Andy Maguire in New Jersey. Following his campaigning involvement, from 1984-1991 Freedman worked at NBC and served as a spokesman for the network’s programming. Freedman oversaw the network’s press operation for the U.S.-Russian Reykjavík and Geneva summits, the 1988 Seoul Olympics, the network’s presidential election coverage and managed media relations for NBC Nightly News, “Meet the Press” and the “Today” show.

Joe Otterson TV Reporter Lindy Booth is the latest cast member to join Sam Esmail’s “Metropolis” series adaptation at Apple, Variety has learned. Booth is now the second confirmed cast member for the series alongside Briana Middleton. Exact plot details for the show are being kept under wraps aside from the fact that it is inspired by the 1927 Fritz Lang sci-fi film of the same name, which has been hailed as one of the greatest and most influential films of the silent film era. Booth will appear in the role of Maria. Booth is best known for her starring role in the TNT series “The Librarians,” which was a spinoff of TNT’s “The Librarian” film series. The show ran for four seasons at the cable network. Booth is also known for recent appearances in shows like “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” “The Flash,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” and “Stumptown.” She has appeared in films like Zack Snyder’s “Dawn of the Dead” and “Kick Ass 2” as well.
