Lanark swimming starlet makes history for club as team-mates also pick up medals at West District meet

Evi Mackie became the fastest female swimmer in Lanark Amateur Swimming Club’s history after shattering a 13-year-old record last weekend.The 13-year-old won all four strokes and a 100m individual medley in the 11-13 years group at the West District Pentaqua Meet at Tollcross ISC in Glasgow on Sunday.She shaved 0.05 seconds off of Victoria Gourlay’s 50m butterfly record set in 2009, with 30.34 seconds.Also winning silver was 11-year-old Imogen Siebers in 50m backstroke, with both swimmers posting personal best times, as did Eron Purdon (4), Orlaith Jeffrey (2), Erin Lammie (4) and Lucy Taylor (5).That success followed on from the Saturday events in the 14 and over category, where the swimmers competed over 100m in all four strokes and a 200m IM.Benji Jones, 16, and 14-year-old Craig Shaw both won silver in the 100m breaststroke, with both posting personal best times.Also setting personal bests were Katie Towers, Abbie Barnstaple, Caitlyn Hamilton, Luke Devlin (3), Malcolm Ormrod (2), Ross Carswell (2), Ian Henderson and Euan McLeod.After the meet, coach Karen Kelly said: “The swimmers put in some great performances, considering it is so early in the season.“This meet was a chance to get some times on the board early doors.“Our swimmers posted over 40 personal best times, so hats off to them.“It’s always good to see club records broken, and this was Evi’s first short-course one.“A special shout-out to the children who haven’t been too well, but came and competed for us.”Follow Lanarkshire Live Sport onTwitter via@LanLiveSport, like us onFacebookor find us onInstagramfor the latest sports news, pictures and video.
