Labour hopefuls lay out their bid to "restore civic pride" in Johnstone

A pair of political hopefuls are mounting a bid to "restore civic pride" to the streets of Johnstone.Former councillor Chris Gilmour and one-time local government officer Gillian Graham are set to stand for election in the Johnstone North, Kilbarchan, Howwood and Lochwinnoch ward.And the pair, who will stand for Labour at May's local government elections, say they are committed to making major improvements to the town and its environment.Chris, who was a councillor from 2012 to 2017, said: "Many people have spoken to me and are disgusted by the state of our town, and some people who used to live here and now visit are absolutely appalled at the way that it has deteriorated over the last few years."It is true to say that one never gets a second chance to make first impression and sadly whether it be the dilapidated and derelict appearance of the Millbrae or the state of the flower beds in Kilbarchan Road people are left with a negative view of our fine and proud town." And the would-be politician, who has lived in Johnstone all his life, added: "There are also concerns expressed by local people at the eyesore that is Johnstone arcade and the lack of attention given to Ludovic gardens in the centre of the town.
