Knowsley in Merseyside now has the highest rate of Covid infections in the country after an alarming rise in cases in the North West.
Latest data reveals that nearly 90 per cent of England's towns and cities have seen a drop in new cases in the past week. Just 37 of the country's 315 local authority areas now have a rising number of cases - with Merseyside emerging as the worst hotspot.
Today Prof Chris Whitty said there were signs some parts of the country have seen their infections peak and are on the way down - but other areas have still yet to reach this point.
The country has been in lockdown since the start of last week following soaring infections linked to a new strain of the virus.
