King Charles III has sent a "no way back" message to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle with a new portrait, according to a royal expert.

A newly released portrait of the King, Queen Consort Camilla, Prince William and Princess Kate has been released to the public, however Prince Harry and Meghan are not present in the snap. The portrait was taken the night before the Queen's funeral on Sunday 18 September, which is when the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were in the United Kingdom.

Speaking about the significance of the photograph, royal expert Richard Kay told the Daily Mail: "It surely can be no coincidence that the picture was taken when the couple were still in Britain and several days before they returned home to their children Archie and Lilibet. "It must, therefore, be yet another signal that they will never again return to their central role in royal life." Prince Harry and Meghan stepped down as senior members of the royal family in January 2020.They then resigned from all royal duties in February 2021.

A statement from Buckingham Palace at the time, read: "The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have confirmed to Her Majesty The Queen that they will not be returning as working members of The Royal Family. "Following conversations with The Duke, The Queen has written confirming that in stepping away from the work of The Royal Family it is not possible to continue with the responsibilities and duties that come with a life of public service." They added: "The honorary military appointments and Royal patronages held by The Duke and Duchess will therefore be returned to Her Majesty, before being redistributed among working members of The Royal Family."While all are saddened by their decision, The Duke and Duchess remain much loved.
