Wishaw boss Martin O’Neill says his side “aren’t waving the white flag yet” after a ninth game without a win left them six points adrift of safety in the West of Scotland Second Division relegation zone. The Beltane Park side fell to a 3-0 defeat at home to Muirkirk on Saturday in what was their first game of 2024.

It leaves them second bottom of the division in 15th-place, five clear of bottom side Glasgow Uni with a game in hand, and two behind 14th-place Forth who have five games more to play. The safety of 13th-spot is six points away and is currently occupied by Glasgow Perthshire, who they travel to this Saturday, so O’Neill says they still have plenty of fight. He said: “It was a disappointing day.

It was never a 3-0. We scored a bizarre own goal with a header from 15-yards and it’s one of those goals that will never happen again.“The second one comes in stoppage time in the first half and the third one at the end.“But we are not waving the white flag yet, that’s for sure.

That is not who we are.“We will dust ourselves down and push on to get a victory at Glasgow Perthshire.“If we do that, it is all to play for.”Meanwhile, Paul Wright has stepped up to the role of assistant manager just a week after joining the club as a coach.
