During her first appearance at Trooping the Colour in 2018, Meghan Markle attempted to lighten the mood. However, a joke she made to her new sister-in-law, Kate Middleton, fell flat, according to her husband, Prince Harry.
In his memoir Spare, Harry, who had only recently married Meghan before the ceremony, wrote that his wife tried to crack a joke with the Princess of Wales but was met with an awkward "yawning silence".
When asked by Kate what she thought of her first official Trooping the Colour, which also marked her debut on the iconic Buckingham Palace balcony, The Duchess of Sussex responded, "Colourful".
This comment, perhaps intended as a brief summary of the day's events celebrating the late queen's official birthday, didn't go down well.
