Mata, 33, is set to retain his favourite squad number next season after penning a one-year contract extension, much to the dismay of his close friend and teammate.

Fernandes joked last week the only downside to Mata signing a new deal at United was the fact he'd be keeping the No.8 shirt number which he wants for himself. "I guess I’ll have to wait for the number 8 another year," Fernandes joked on social media, reacting to Mata's extension.
