“Even the people of Syria are celebrating the New York Mets’ signing Juan Soto,” intoned Jon Stewart on tonight’s Daily Show, mixing together video of Syrians reveling at the downfall of a tyrant with headlines reporting that his beloved Mets beating out the Yankees in a $765 million bidding war to sign the superstar outfielder.

Stewart then turned wholly to Syria, rolling through images of civilians unfurling flags and riding on tanks through the streets, saying of the deposition of strongman Bashar al-Assad, “You know it’s the real deal because they sealed it with the universal symbol of fallen dictatorships: the traditional toppling of the statues.” Cue the footage of giant statues being destroyed by the Syrian citizenry, recalling the fate of Saddam Hussein’s monuments to himself after the fall of Baghdad.

The Daily Show host ended his monologue with a short bit on the manhunt for the suspect in the shooting of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson – which ended in a McDonald’s – and a longer look at incoming president Donald Trump’s victory lap around Europe.
