Johnny Depp set for court date in bid to overturn 'wife beater' ruling

Johnny Depp 's attempt to overturn the High Court ruling that he assaulted ex-wife Amber Heard will be examined in a hearing at the Court of Appeal on Thursday morning.

The Pirates of the Caribbean star, 57, was married to Ms Heard from 2015 to 2017. Now Mr Depp is seeking a retrial of his libel claim against publisher News Group Newspapers (NGN) over an article by The Sun that called him a "wife beater".

The ruling by a High Court judge last year found that the claims in the article were "substantially true". Mr Justice Nicol ruled following a three-week trial last July that Mr Depp assaulted his former wife Ms Heard, 34, on 12 of the 14 alleged incidents of domestic violence that were relied on by NGN in its defence against the libel
