John le Carre's wife Valerie Jane Eustace has died just weeks of him of a 'broken heart'. The 82-year-old former book editor died "peacefully" at their Cornwall home last Saturday, two months after his death from pneumonia in December 2020, a family spokesman confirmed to the Daily Mail.

Valerie, known as Jane to her family, had been married to the Tinker, Tailor, Soldier Spy novelist for 48 years, and he'd often spoken highly of her ability to help a book come together.

The couple got together towards the end of his first marriage to Ann Sharp after meeting at a book event in Birmingham, and in a letter he'd written to his psychiatrist in a bid to work out why that marriage was failing, the writer admitted he'd taken a lover - Jane.
