'When the manuscript was finished, I printed it out and I wanted her to be the first person to read it,' Gaines recalled. 'Every five seconds she'd call, "I'm crying!"' It was a sweet moment for us,' she said. 'Then it shifted to where, I am so intrigued by what was she doing as we were living this life, I was just trying to make it and be fine, she was doing the same thing in her own little world.' Gaines also revealed how her Korean mother would respond to racist remarks hurled her way.'When we were in the grocery store, I mean numerous times, people would say and she would just act like she didn't hear,' she recalled.
