Jennifer Garner's dad, William John Garner, has sadly passed away at the age of 85. The actress shared the heartbreaking news on social media, revealing that her father died "peacefully" in his sleep over the Easter weekend.The 52 year old star of 13 Going on 30 announced her dad's passing on Monday afternoon as she posted a touching tribute to him with a selection of photographs and a lengthy caption in which she praised the type of father he was.

Jennifer, who shares three children with ex-husband Ben Affleck, said that her dad was surrounded by his loved ones when he died, and they all sang Amazing Grace to him.

She also explained that her dad had been ill for a while but had lived a long and happy life. Jennifer's post read: "My dad passed peacefully Saturday afternoon.

We were with him, singing Amazing Grace as he left us (did we carry him across or scare him away- valid question.) While there is no tragedy in the death of an 85 year old man who lived a healthy, wonderful life, I know grief is unavoidable, waiting around unexpected corners." She went on to say: "Today is for gratitude.
