Harry and Sandra Redknapp have recalled how their son Jamie was mocked for his “Spice Boy” nickname during his 19-year marriage to his former wife Louise.
Writing in their new book, When Harry Met Sandra, Sandra reveals the former footballer, now 49, gained the nickname after marrying pop star Louise in 1998.
She says: “After the wedding, the press attention on them both grew. Louise’s solo career was taking off after she had decide to quit Eternal two years earlier, and she was on the cover of all the magazines. “Meanwhile, Jamie had been nicknamed a ‘Spice Boy’ by the tabloids – we always used to laugh at that, although never really sure what it meant – and he was getting papped for the first time off the pitch.” She continued: "Louise got married around the same time David Beckham was dating Victoria Adams, so there was a lot of interest in footballers’ wives and girlfriends – the WAGs as they were called.
You didn’t have that in mine and Tina Moore’s day, thankfully” Jamie and singer Louise, 47, who are parents to sons Charlie, 18, and Beau, 13, married in Bermuda on board a yacht before enjoying a reception at the Marriott Castle Harbour Hotel. “They had chosen to get married in Bermuda away from the limelight back home and they wanted to keep it low key,” recalls Sandra. “Three days after Jamie popped the question, he married Louise in a beautiful ceremony on board an 80-foot white yacht called Lady Erica on June 29 – the day before mine and Harry’s 31st wedding anniversary.” She goes on to describe how Louise looked “absolutely stunning” in her white chiffon dress, which she teamed with a blue butterfly clip in her hair that matched the butterflies on her heels.
