James Gunn Reveals If 'Peacemaker' & 'The Suicide Squad' Are Canon In New DCU

The new DCU under James Gunn and Peter Safran‘s leadership is kicking off this week! Creature Commandos is the first project being released, while the upcoming Superman movie will be the “official” start of the upcoming intertwined DC Comics film and television universe.

While the start of something new is here, there are other DC projects that Gunn has and is still working on, like The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker, which is returning for a second season.

In a new interview, the writer/director and co-head of DC Studios revealed if those projects that pre-date the new DCU are part of the same continual universe. Keep reading to find out more… “Yeah, they’re light canon,” James told THR. “Peacemaker is pretty straightforward, with the exception of the appearance by a certain group [the former DCEU’s Justice League] at the end. (Laughs.) They don’t exist yet.

But the rule is: If we mention [something from the past] in one of the new DCU shows [and movies], then it happened. So that’s the way we’re dealing with it.” James recently wrapped Peacemaker season two, after wrapping filming on Superman.
