James Caan dead: The Godfather and Misery star has died, aged 82

Hollywood actor James Caan, who played Sonny Corleone in The Godfather, has died aged 82. In a social media statement released by the family, they said: "It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Jimmy on the evening of July 6.

The family appreciates the outpouring of love and heartfelt condolences and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time.” The message concludes with “End of tweet” – a nod to the phrase that Caan used to wrap up all his tweets.Caan is best known for his role in The Godfather, as his stellar portrayal earned him an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor and later reprised the role for The Godfather Part II with a cameo appearance at the end.He enjoyed a decades-long career, starting out in the 1960s with theatre and then films like El Dorado, Countdown, and Francis Ford Coppola’s The Rain People.

He continued to make occasional but beloved, appearances in the 90s and into the new millennium, in films like Bottle Rocket, The Yards and, of course, Elf.Caan continued to act until his death, and was due to film his fifth collaboration with Coppola, titled Megalopolis, this autumn.One of his last public appearances came with the 50th anniversary of the release of The Godfather in February.No cause of death has been provided yet.
