TV icon Brenda Blethyn has announced she will be leaving her acclaimed role as the titular character in Vera after 14 series, sharing an emotional farewell.

The Academy and Emmy nominated actress is set to retire DCI Vera Stanhope's iconic trench coat and hat after the completion of series 14 this summer.

Brenda, who stepped into Vera's shoes back in 2011, expressed her sentiments in a heartfelt statement, confirming her decision to step down.

The 78 year old said: "Working on Vera has been a joy from beginning to end and I'm sad to be saying Cheerio. But I am so proud of our achievements over the last fourteen years.
