Viewers of ITV's new drama, Mr Bates vs The Post Office, were left feeling "sick to their stomach" and "in tears" after just one episode.
The show tells the true story of mysterious financial losses at village post offices, and how a new computer system led to many postmasters being wrongly accused of theft and fraud between 1999 and 2015.The series, which aired on New Year's Day, follows Alan Bates and his partner Suzanne Sercombe who invested their life savings into a Post Office branch in Llandudno, North Wales.
When money went missing, Alan, played by Toby Jones, denied responsibility like other postmasters, leading to the Post Office ending their contract within three months.This resulted in Alan and Suzanne losing their £65,000 investment.
Later, Alan led a campaign for Post Office whistleblowers and eventually lodged a Group Litigation Order against the Post Office at the High Court, involving 555 claimants.
