As viewers returned to the Dales over the Christmas period, Emmerdale left fans of the ITV soap reeling after an unexpected death rocked the village.

Played by Dean Andrews, Will Tate died of a heart attack on Christmas Day moments after an argument with his wife Kim Tate (Claire King).

The pair battled in a feud that lasted for months before recently deciding to reignite their marriage. However, Kim was unaware of Will's most recent betrayal - collaborating with her ex-financial advisor Peter to undermine her, who was revealed to be working for Joe Tate who planned to exact revenge on Kim.

Speaking of his return, Ned Porteous, who plays Joe, said: "He has always been a character with a dark side, but there could be something much bigger at play here.
