The familiar automatic door into the Terminal 1 arrivals halls slides open and a handful of passengers - most of them wearing face masks - walk onto the all-but deserted concourse.
It's rather a forlorn sight for anyone who is familiar with the usual buzz at Manchester Airport. It's Friday morning and in normal circumstances there would be a crowd of people vying for the best spot up against the railing near those doors, waiting for the arrival of a newly tanned loved one perhaps returning from a holiday.
Spar, Boots and WH Smith are open but there are virtually no customers: the odd builder wearing a hard hat and a few others who obviously work at the airport.
