For more than 150 years Brits have been able to celebrate Boxing Day as a bank holiday. December 26 has been designated as one of the constituted bank holidays across England and Wales since 1871.

It has allowed millions of families to spend more time together over the festive period, rather than return to work straight after the celebrations on Christmas Day itself.
