Netflix is once again indulging our need for empowering, female-led dramas with the imminent release of Firefly Lane. The emotional story, which has already been getting the thumbs up from critics, has serious ‘Beaches vibes,’ a stellar cast, and looks set to skyrocket into the streaming site’s most-watched shows — the only thing missing is Bette Midler.

Ahead of the release, we’ve broken down everything you need to know about Firefly Lane. The story begins in the 1970s and follows the lives of two female friends over three decades in the Pacific North West of America.

One, Kate, is shy and eager to please while the other, Tully, is glamorous and popular at school but has a dark secret that is destroying her.
