The inquest revealed Tony suffered an abdominal bleed, known as an intraperitoneal haemorrhage. He went in for an "uneventful" elective stoma reversal in December of 2023 at the Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Hospital in Kent.
Post-surgery, complications arose when he began to bleed, a situation exacerbated by anti-coagulant treatment.The treatment was given correctly for his atrial fibrillation and he even showed signs of improvement.
However, he was found dead on December 16 after suffering a cardiac shock. His son, Kent, paid tribute saying: "My Dad, Tony Mathews was a loving father, and a talented actor and painter.
