Council crews tackling fly-tipping in South Ayrshire say the unattractive sights are on the decline.Teams have recorded a 22 per cent decrease in fly-tipping across the local authority in 2022 compared to the previous year representing 185 less incidents than in 2021.But hundreds of disgraceful incidents have still been recorded with crews having to clear up 637 scenes where rubbish has piled up in public places.Last week, the Neighbourhood Services ‘Hit Squad’ had to tackle shameful scenes in Prestwick as overflowing bins were left toppled over – with household items dumped on top.Shocking pictures shown by South Ayrshire Council show the mess building up with items including an old hoover and mattress left abandoned near to Prestwick Toll.Council chiefs have praised their elite team which also responds to litter, leaves, moss and graffiti.And they have sent a stark warning to anyone caught disposing of waste illegally, with fly-tippers facing a £200 on the spot fine.A council spokesperson said: “Our neighbourhood services hit squad carry out a range of work in communities across South Ayrshire to improve the visual aspect of our open spaces.

This includes removing litter, leaves, moss, graffiti and fly tipping.“Fly tipping is not just unsightly, it harms the environment and can be a risk to health.“We would ask the public to report any incidents of fly tipping which we will then investigate.
