Immigration minister Robert Jenrick has tonight (Wednesday) resigned after a row over sending immigrants to Rwanda. The Home Secretary James Cleverly confirmed to the House of Commons this evening that Mr Jenrick has left the Government.
It follows Mr Jenrick's reported demands to opt out of European human rights laws to revive the Rwanda policy. The Prime Minister shunned taking the more hardline option with his new emergency legislation. “That has been confirmed,” Mr Cleverly said after repeated questioning during his Commons statement on the plans, during which the immigration minister was conspicuously absent. Labour former minister Sir Chris Bryant demanded to know whether the 41-year-old Conservative MP for Newark in Nottinghamshire had resigned, but wasn't given an answer.
