Idrissa Akuna Elba OBE (born 6 September 1972) is an English actor, writer, producer, rapper, singer, songwriter and DJ. He is known for roles including Stringer Bell in the HBO series The Wire, DCI John Luther in the BBC One series Luther, and Nelson Mandela in the biographical film Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom (2013). He has been nominated four times for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Miniseries or Television Film, winning one, and was nominated five times for a Primetime Emmy Award.

Idris Elba Sends a Message of Hope With 'Don't Quit' Poem

Idris Elba is helping us find some hope in these trying times. The 47-year-old Luther actor – who has recovered from the coronavirus himself – spoke to UK viewers via a message on the BBC.

In the segment, released on Friday (April 10), Idris read the poem “Don’t Quit” from American poet John Greenleaf Whittier. Idris read, “When things go wrong as they sometimes will; when the road you’re trudging seems all uphill; when the funds are low but the debts are high; when you want to smile but you have to sigh; when care is pressing you down a bit, rest if you must but don’t you quit.” Watch below.
