Ice hockey player, 14, died after suffering allergic reaction to popcorn

A talented teenage ice hockey player tragically died when he had an allergic reaction after eating popcorn at an Odeon cinema and had left his epipen at home.

Ruben Bousquet, who was just 14, was allergic to cows milk, raw egg and soya had previously suffered multiple prior anaphylactic shocks in March 2017 which he survived after taking a shot of his epipen.

Southwark Coroner’s Court heard on Wednesday that on April 18, 2018, he ate the sweet popcorn with a Fanta drink while watching a film with his parents at an Odeon Cinema in London at around 8.30pm.

As he started to feel unwell the family decided to return to their home in Balham, south London, to access Ruben’s epipen, which he had left behind, the court heard.
