A woman who thought she had a cold woke up fearing she had suffered a stroke. Caoimhe Reddy noticed her cheek felt a bit numb as she first woke up.
She thought she must have been 'sleeping funny' - but feared something more serious when she couldn't drink her coffee. Caoimhe looked in the mirror to discover half of her face was slumped, having become paralysed in the night.
The 26-year-old called NHS 111 and said she may have been having a stroke. But after seven weeks of tests, the cause of her paralysis remains a mystery. I’m still working on eating and drinking, and talking is really laboured. “At first I was like, ‘okay, cool. It’ll go away after a couple of days.’ Then, when it got to two weeks and it still wasn’t better - it was almost like I had to keep learning how to deal with it.” The best guess from medics is that Caoimhe is suffering inflamed facial nerves caused by an infection, and she needs to wait it out.
