Sergio Reguilon was in tears in the dressing room after Manchester United were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Newcastle earlier in the season.
Reguilon was signed on loan from Tottenham on deadline day in the summer transfer window, as Luke Shaw had picked up an injury and Tyrell Malacia was sidelined.
The Spaniard was brought to Old Trafford as a stopgap signing until Shaw and Malacia returned to fitness. However, the break clause in his contract was activated in January and he returned to Spurs having made 12 appearances for United in total, seven of which were starts.
Sources at United insisted they always regarded Reguilon as a short-term signing and after returning to his parent club, he joined Brentford on another loan deal. United were embarrassed against Newcastle's second string in that game and Reguilon played the full 90 minutes as the Reds' defence of the Carabao Cup came to a halt. "We were defending the title and we were out," he said. "I don’t care if I am here for six months, I was upset.
