A woman who lost her speech for three months following a stroke feels she has lost her identity as she now speaks with an completely different accent.
Althia Bryden, a 58-year-old retired customer service advisor from London, was left unable to speak or feel the upper right side of her body in May this year.
After surgery in August to remove the cause of her stroke, a carotid web in her neck, Althia spontaneously regained her ability to speak - but with a distinct Italian accent.
Despite never having been to Italy or spoken Italian, Althia found herself slipping in Italian words and mannerisms such as “mamma mia”, “bambino” and “si” into conversation without realising it.
