Hundreds take step back in time as Alyth hosts Iron Age weekend

Around 600 people experienced a taste of life in the Iron Age thanks to the innovative Cateran Ecomuseum.The team behind the ‘museum without walls’ curated a packed programme of free, family-friendly, heritage activities over July 6 and 7 which included sessions on Iron Age crafts as well as demonstrations of traditional skills such as metal-working, leather-working and stone-carving.There were also storytelling sessions, re-enactments, ancient pigment painting and workshops, all aimed at revealing how the story of our past can help guide the story of our future.The event took place in Diamond Jubilee Park in Alyth and was part of the Ecomuseum’s wider Museum of Rapid Transition programme, which is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Cairngorms National Park Authority and the Drumderg Windfarm Community Benefit Fund.It aims to show how the area’s heritage can inspire people to take action to help tackle the climate and biodiversity crises.The Iron Age dates from approximately 800 BC to AD 400 and there are a number of important sites from the period in the Cateran Ecomuseum area, including a significant number of souterrains – stone-lined underground passages and chambers often associated with settlement – and one of the best-preserved examples of an enclosed hilltop settlement, Barry Hill Fort near Alyth.Clare Cooper is one of the co-founders and a co-director of the Cateran Ecomuseum.She said: “What a fantastic event!
