“Nickel Boys,” which received a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination in addition to its Best Picture nod, is based on Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, “The Nickel Boys.” Set at a reform school called Nickel Academy, the story follows Elwood, a young Black man sent to the school after being wrongly accused of a crime.

It’s inspired by the real-life Dozier School, which was permanently closed in 2011 after years of allegations of cruelty and abuse. The film is the first narrative feature from director RaMell Ross, who also shares the Best Adapted Screenplay nom with Joslyn Barnes.

It’s also notable for its cinematography; cinematographer Jomo Fray shot the film in a first-person point-of-view, meaning the camera is effectively the eyes of the point-of-view character — most often, Elwood.Just in time for the Oscars, the film is streaming on not one but two different services, making it that much easier to watch without having to drop $20 on VOD or $6 on a rental — it’s also streaming on MGM+.To watch “Nickel Boys” for free, first you’ll need to be an Amazon Prime subscriber.

If you aren’t, no worries! It’s easy to get started and you won’t have to pay anything toward your membership for 30 days, but still take advantage of all the perks. From there, you’ll be able to add a Prime Video Channel subscription onto your account — in this case, you’ll want to add MGM+.
