The two-week Chinese New Year celebrations get underway today. Around one sixth of the world’s population observe the festival, that’s more than one billion people.
Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, marks the start of a new lunar year. The date changes every year as it depends on the date the new moon appears between January 21 and February 20.
Each year is represented by an animal in the Chinese zodiac. There are 12 animals in total which take it in turns to appear, and 2021 will be the Year of the Ox.
