Millions of people on Universal Credit will see their monthly benefit payments increase next year. Chancellor Jeremy Hunt announced in his autumn statement on Wednesday that benefits will rise by September’s inflation figure of 6.7% from April 2024.

There had been speculation ahead of time that the rise would be last month’s figure of 4.6%. Mr Hunt told Parliament while delivering his autumn statement on Wednesday: “We will continue to support families in difficulty.” He added: “I know there’s been some speculation that we would increase benefits next year by the lower October figure for inflation, but cost-of-living pressures remain at their most acute for the poorest families.
