Every athlete dreams of picking up an Olympic gold medal and standing on that podium. They are worth everything to those who dedicate their lives to sports.
They couldn’t put a price on any of those medals. Irish rowers Fintan Mc Carthy and Paul O’Donovan picked up Ireland’s first gold medals on Wednesday night and they were overwhelmed with pride.
However, for those of us who spend the Olympics watching from the couch, we’re asking how much those medals are actually worth!
Well, each medal is made up of 556 grams of gold and silver. According to CNBC’s markets team, the Tokyo Olympics’ first-place medal contains six grams of gold and 550 grams of silver which are worth €296 and €392 respectively, or €688 in total.
