For the latest Stockport news sign up to the MyStockport newsletter here The Liberal Democrats are now the largest group on Stockport council after an election night of several twists and turns - but that doesn’t necessarily mean they will take the reins at the town hall.
Although the Lib Dems have nudged ahead of Labour - with 26 councillors to their 25 - the council remains under ‘no overall control’.
A party needs at least 32 councillors to form a majority on the 63-seat authority. That means there could still be everything to play for in the coming days.
The Lib Dems believe that, as the biggest group, it's only fair they should have the opportunity to form the administration and lead the council for the next 12 months.
