New data has revealed that over 90 per cent of local areas in the UK have seen a steady increase in Covid infection rates. Of the 377 local areas in the nation, 344 have seen a week-on-week rise while only 31 (8 per cent) have seen a fall.
Two have remained unchanged. It comes after the government refused to give a conclusive answer regarding more restrictions in England to curb the spread of the Omicron variant of Covid-19. Lambeth in London has the highest infection rate with 8,780 new cases popping up in the seven days to December 17 - the equivalent of 2,278.3 per 100,000 people.
