Plans to build 20 new flats on the site of the former Parkstone Hotel in Prestwick’s Ardayre Road have been withdrawn. Ayrshire Live has learned that the land had been proposed for housing — with 20 new flats, parking, landscaping and associated works in the pipeline.

However, according to South Ayrshire Council’s online planning portal, the plans have been binned. No reason has been given for the proposal’s withdrawal. Now question marks hang over the long-term future of the vacant site.

In December 2020, Ayrshire Live told how the iconic Prestwick hotel was due to be demolished – after plans to build a care home in its place were refused.

The historic 30-bedroom Parkstone, on the esplanade, had operated for more than 80 years, hosting countless weddings, functions, celebrations and meetings. However, the business became no longer viable and “irrecoverable damage,” caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, cast a shadow over its future. And in 2020, Ayrshire Live told how hotel owner Eric Ronald and his business partner were investigating “all possible avenues” in an attempt to preserve and create jobs.An application to build flats on the site was lodged with the council in March, but according to the council website this week, the proposals were withdrawn.Independent councillor for the Prestwick ward, Hugh Hunter, said he is confident the site will be redeveloped in due course. He said: “I don’t have any concerns over the future because that’s an excellent site.“I can’t imagine it lying empty for terribly long.”Don't miss the latest Ayrshire headlines –sign up to our free daily newsletter here
