House of Lords shame over staff on zero-hour contracts despite ban attempts

Dozens of House of Lords staff are on zero-hour contracts despite attempts to ban the deals. Some 63 workers have no guaranteed weekly minimum hours - while peers can claim £305 for each day they turn up.

The number of these "variable hours contracts" has risen from 59 since 2015. SNP MP Chris Stephens, who has led a backbench Bill aiming to ban zero-hour contracts, told the Mirror: “There’s no excuse for anybody to be in a zero hour contract in parliament or not. “There shouldn’t be any need at all for anything other than guaranteed hours contracts.” Almost a million workers in the UK are on zero-hour contracts.
