Hours of traffic chaos as unlucky bus driver gets double-decker wedged under bridge

An unlucky commute for many weekend workers this afternoon (March 12) - after a bus driver got his double-decker wedged under a bridge.

Fairfax Road, Prestwich, was forced to shut at around 12.30pm following the mishap, which saw the vehicle stuck fast. Pictures from the scene show the bus unable to move after becoming jammed beneath the railway bridge.

The road remained closed in both directions until just after 4pm. A tweet from the organisation read: "Road closed in both directions beneath a bridge following a collision "Bus services are diverted along Heywood Road and Scholes Lane in both directions." Twitter account MancTraffic added: "A double-decker bus has got stuck under the railway bridge at Fairfax Rd, Prestwich so closures in place between Bury New Rd and Poppythorn Lane/Heys Lane.
