A homeless charity has blasted Glasgow council bosses after 'shocking' pictures emerged of people sleeping rough on the steps of the authority's chambers.

The pictures show a man huddled in a sleeping bag outside the council's ornate headquarters on George Square last night. Homeless Project Scotland, which runs the soup kitchen by the city's Central Station, said the situation with homelessness in the city was at a 'crisis level' and urged the local authority to put in more support.

Colin McInnes of the charity told the Daily Record that SNP council leader Susan Aitken must 'step up or step down' on the issue. He said: "The pictures are very sad - homeless is at a crisis level in the city."We called the council's commissioned service at 6.20pm they had finished for the night which is shocking."We see people sleeping rough all the time at the chambers only if the SNP and Susan Aiken would open the door and let them in."The government and council should come ask us instead of paid services that say what the council and government want to hear."The charity shared shocking pictures with the Record last year showing mothers and young children queuing up for food at their soup kitchen last year. Our story caused a national shock and was picked up by papers south of the border in England bringing UK-wide attention to the issue.Other issues that have been raised include the state of some of the temporary accommodation in the city.Colin added: "We say Susan Aiken step up or step down."The authority must listen to the Homeless Project Scotland give us a voice for the people of Scotlands homeless and give us a building to open doors 24hrs to help people into safe warmth"They should also change policy stop making it so difficult
