A gutsy grandmother has sounded the alarm after a scammer, posing as an HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) official, phoned her and threatened arrest if she didn't provide her bank details.
92-year-old Betty, was left shaken and in tears following the call where the fraudster falsely claimed she had received an overpayment of state pension.
They insisted she owed £170 and would face police arrest that afternoon if she failed to comply. However, Essex resident Betty sensed something was amiss with the supposed HMRC call.
She told the con artist she'd consult with her daughter first, avoiding the trap of divulging any personal information.
