HMRC has issued a statement ahead of changes coming in next year that will affect online marketplaces such as Vinted and eBay.

From next year, sites such as Vinted, Depop and eBay will start sharing some user sales and personal data from January 2025 with HMRC, due to new legal obligations.

Those who sold at least 30 items or earned roughly £1,700 on a website or app in 2024 will be contacted by the digital platform in January to let them know that some personal information will be sent to HMRC.

When announced last year, the new process for sharing information with HMRC led to speculation that a new tax was being introduced.
