A mysterious cave hidden away in the Lake District hills was the beloved home of a man for nearly 30 years after he moved to the countryside to escape the big city.

Many hikers would likely bypass the unassuming cavern in Borrowdale without a second thought but the special spot has a fascinating history.

Millican Dalton, from London, known as the 'Professor of Adventure' lived a peaceful and happy life inside the cave back in the early-mid 1900s for almost three decades.

The explorer, who loved the outdoors, was born to a Quaker family in 1867 and grew up in the bustling city of London, Lancs Live reports.
