'Hero' Ben ran four marathons in 24 hours to fight rare cancer that took his friend

For the latest Rochdale news sign up to the MyRochdale newsletter here A big-hearted Rochdale runner has raised more than £21,000 for charity after taking on a mega marathon challenge in memory of a father-of-two who died aged just 29 of a rare form of cancer.

Ben Bate, 39, completed four marathons in under 24 hours to raise funds for Sarcoma UK. The personal trainer took on the challenge as a tribute to good friend and client Tom Makin.

He started the run which included 26 laps around Bamford and Norden at 4pm on Saturday (July 2) and concluded outside his BodyPro Personal Training Studio on Bury Road on Sunday afternoon with a sea of supporters cheering him to the finish line.
