Gemma Lawson is very much the face of our caring health service in Scotland – and her unstinting efforts to go the extra mile for her patients has been recognised.She won the People’s Choice Award at the Scottish Health Awards, run by the Daily Record in partnership with NHS Scotland and the Scottish Government to celebrate the dedication of the health and care services.Gemma, a Health Care Support Worker, Care of the Older Person at Cameron Hospital in NHS Fife, was one of a long list of healing heroes attending a glittering awards event last week in Edinburgh.During the pandemic, she volunteered at the hospital alongside her official role, supporting the mental health and wellbeing of patients during this difficult and often lonely time.It meant coming in after her clinical work was finished and cheering up the patients with activities such as nail painting, reminiscence, sing-a-longs, bingo, and even organising a garden party for the Queen’s Jubilee.The People’s Choice Award, where the public cast votes for the finalists, recognises NHS and staff and carers in responding to the coronavirus pandemic while maintaining essential services and care. “You are only as good as your team and I work with the best team,” said Gemma. “Thank you to everyone who voted for me, it means the world.”The finalists in the 16 categories of the Scottish Health Awards gathered at the O2 Academy in Edinburgh hosted by comedian Fred MacAulay and attended by Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care Humza Yousaf MSP, alongside representatives from the Scottish Government, NHS Scotland and the Daily Record.Mr Yousaf MSP said: “This is the 21st year of the awards, and with more than 750 nominations, it’s clear that the people of Scotland have
