Zander Clark saved an early penalty from Adam Idah before Yang was sent off for a high boot on 16 minutes, and it was the home side who took the lead through Jorge Grant's spot-kick just before half-time.
That came after VAR ruled Tomoki Iwata had handled the ball and it was Grant, not skipper Shankland, who stepped up to take it.
Shankland has missed three penalties already this season and it was Grant given the chance here, despite Shankland scoring their latest spot-kick against Hibs during the week.
