Heartbroken parents told sick son, 1, will not live long enough to go to school

The parents of a one-year-old boy with a rare condition have spoken of their heartbreak that they will never see him go to school.

Little Rowan Packer has Tay-Sachs Disease, a genetic condition which causes progressive damage to the nervous system. His mum Deborah McDonald said it was "hard knowing no matter what you do, Rowan will not survive" as she spoke out to raise awareness of the condition.

It affects just one in 320,000 babies – although it is more common within the Ashkenazi Jewish population of Eastern Europe where one in 3,500 babies are born with it.

The family do not think there are Ashkenazi antecedents on either side and Rowan’s brother and sister Aaron, seven, and Gracie, five, do not have the condition, reports Daily
