Michael Schneider Variety Editor at Large “Succession” alums Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod are here for “Harry Potter.” Gardiner has been tapped to serve as showrunner and executive producer of HBO’s upcoming new untitled series based on the “Harry Potter” books, while Mylod is on board to direct multiple episodes, as well as executive produce.
The news was announced Wednesday by HBO and Warner Bros. TV, which are behind the HBO Original series. Both Gardiner and Mylod are already deeply entrenched in the HBO family: Besides “Succession,” Gardiner also worked on “His Dark Materials.” And Mylod is a regular helmer at the pay cabler, having also been on “Game of Thrones,” “The Last of Us” and “Entourage,” in addition to his Emmy-winning work on “Succession.” Gardiner and Mylod were tapped following an extensive exercise by HBO and Warner Bros.
to find the right creative team to steer the “Potter” enterprise. “We’re in conversations with a number of different writers to figure out who’s going to be the person to lead that franchise for us,” Warner Bros.
TV chairman Channing Dungey told Variety in January. At the time, Dungey said it was important to have the producers in place before moving on to casting, which will be an entirely new ensemble from the films. “The first step for us is figuring out who this showrunner is going to be and once we get that locked down, then we can start having those [casting] conversations,” she said back then.
