He used his trusted position as a GP in the small Greater Manchester town of Hyde to carry out his twisted campaign of death, often targeting elderly and vulnerable victims.
He was known locally as the "good doctor" and his elderly female patients were said to "adore" him. But instead of caring for those who came to him in need, Shipman administered a lethal dose of poison to many of them - and walked away with cash from their wills.
